Jordan returns for her annual Mala workshop at the Llama. This time she’s booked between the Sadhana class and Reiki & Sound bath with Stephanie and Kenny. So, we decided to host a pot luck too. Even if you decide not to participate and make your own Mala, you can come early, stay late, and join community at the Llama.
Of course the best option is the all day event, if you ask us! Our teacher, Jordan Palmer for an afternoon of intention setting and Dhyana. Jordan will lead you through the sacred art of mala making and share how malas are used in daily practice to help deepen a meditation practice.
The mala, or traditional prayer necklace of 108 beads, means “meditation garland” in Sanskrit. Originating in India 3000 years ago, malas have roots in Hinduism and Buddhism and have been used by yogis and other seekers to help focus the mind during meditation by moving their fingers over the beads to recite affirmations or mantras. The symbolism of the mala is rich and can be seen as a metaphor for life: Each bead represents a truth; the small knot between each bead a challenge between the smoother, more beautiful aspects of life. Not to be overlooked, the number of beads in a mala—108—is considered sacred in Vedic culture, representing the wholeness of existence.
